WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Following a recent series of hit and run crashes, local investigators are increasingly relying on technology to identify and locate suspects.
Jeremy Noel, a forensic investigator with the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office, noted that the role of technology in investigations has evolved significantly during his nearly decade-long career.
“When we have a case like a hit and run, we must utilize information from community members as well as technology,” Noel explained.
Cell Phones and Cameras Play a Key Role
Noel highlighted the widespread use of cell phones as the most significant advancement in investigations.
“Nowadays, everyone has a cell phone. One of the major tools we use in hit and run cases is examining a person’s cell phone or their cellular records from their mobile carrier,” he said.
Investigators also review CCTV and Flock camera footage to gather additional details. Doorbell camera footage has become another valuable resource.
“Many people have Ring doorbell cameras or other home surveillance systems, which we rely on heavily,” Noel added.
Challenges of Technology
Noel acknowledged that the abundance of footage and data can create challenges.
“We have to filter through the information carefully to avoid wasting time on leads that won’t yield results,” he said.
Community Tips Remain Essential
While technology is crucial, investigators still depend on tips from the public to guide their efforts. However, there are limits to the information that can be shared during an active investigation.
“We involve the community to a certain extent, but sometimes we can’t disclose all details because it’s part of the investigative process,” Noel explained.
